Over the past 3 months I've been dealing with my poor PS3 slim's slow death. The warranty is expired and I'm a pretty poor guy. The thing is I know what's wrong with it but I'm not sure how to go about fixing it. The GPU is overheating. At first I could just wait and restart the PS3 after about 15 minutes, but as of late, it dies before I can even get to the recovery menu. Has anyone dealt with this sort of thing before? I've done some reading around and if it's not completely dead, I can look into replacing the thermal paste. I've also seen people suggesting to bake it back together, but that just sounds like a way to play your PS3 for a final hurrah of about 3 or 4 hours. Any suggestions would be welcome (excludin hurrr replace it). |

Yeah I've taken it apart and everything, even replaced the hard drive because that's what I initially thought was the problem. It's really weird, I'll turn it on, do the whole holding the power button ritual. Beep, beep beep, beep beep beep..... nothing. When I shut it off I hear this chunk sound (only sometimes). It's also worth noting that the optical audio thing on the back won't power on (not sure if this matters because I've never used it) |

No video output. It also seems the usb ports don't send any power out when I start it that way. |

Mine was acting up like that, so I dusted it out and put it in a box with a hair dryer for a while and it worked fine for a few days afterwards. I was able to at least pull my save data, some picture files, and a few other things off of there before it decided to give out on me completely.
Some local game stores where I live actually fix PS3s, but I decided to just buy a brand new super slim one and not make the same mistake I did with my last one (i.e. not letting it collect dust and overheat)
The reason mine went out was because I ran it for too long while it was overheating. It got to a very hot temperature and melted one of the connections which prevented it from starting up.
If you don't have a lot of cash but still want another PS3 you could consider buying a used PS3. There might be someone with a PS3 that isn't able to read disks but can still play games like Dust perfectly fine. As for NEW PS3s, the cheapest one is a $200 model with a very small amount of storage space, which is great as long as you don't plan on downloading a ton of games.
Hope this helps.
Sounds exactly like what I did to mine, although it was well ventilated. We only have one wireless router aaaaaalll the way on the other side of the house so I had to place it in the window to get a decent signal strength. Played dust heavily all summer with the sun beating down on my poor machine :(

Clean up your old slim so that it looks nice and new.
Put old broken slim in box, after taking out hard drive and replacing it with that of the new one (if you care about keeping your ****. Otherwise, wipe it and do a full reset)
Return it.
Enjoy your new, fully functioning PS3 for free.
Do you think they'd look at it really hard? I know the hdmi in is kind of wonky and bent up due to all the positions I've had it in. |
